Manufacturers Discontinue 2.4 Liter Engine Generators

Supply Chain Shortages brought production of generators using a 2.4-liter, 1800 RPM propane and natural gas engine to a standstill. At least two manufacturers have discontinued models that use the engines as they seek new powerplants for their generators.

The 2.4-liter engines run at 1800 RPM, make less noise, and may use less fuel than their 3600 RPM counterparts. Turbocharged and aftercooled versions make the engines powerful enough to drive alternators for generators up to 60 kilowatts.

Without a ready alternative, companies like Generac and Cummins have discontinued generators that use the 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine.

Generac used the engines in Protector Series Generators from 22kW to 60kW. The generators ran on propane or natural gas. Generac has discontinued all RG series generators with the 2.4 liter engine.

Cummins also used the 2.4 liter natural gas or propane engine in generators from 25kW to 40kW and discontinued the generators in early October.

Norwall has other liquid cooled generators for home and commercial backup with similar capacities and different engines available for purchase.

Liquid-cooled generators use an automotive-type cooling system with a  pump that circulates coolant throug the engine and radiator with a fan to cool the liquid. Better cooling allows liquid-cooled generators to supply more power and makes them more reliable in hot climates where temperatures often climb into the triple digits.
