Briggs and Stratton’s Most Powerful Home or Small Business Standby Generator with up to 26kW of Continuous Power.
26kW Generator Models Lead Home and Commercial Air-Cooled Generator Market
Last Summer, Briggs and Stratton announced their new 26kW Generator as the most powerful home standby in its class. The Briggs and Stratton PowerProtect Home Standby Generator Series are air-cooled generators designed for home and small business backup systems. The PowerProtect Series is the latest model line by the Milwaukee Wisconsin based company. Other models in the line include 10, 12, 17, and 20-kilowatt capacity standby generators.
Several months after the Briggs and Stratton announcement, Generac Power Systems introduced the newest addition to the Generac Guardian Series, the 26kW. The Guardian Series is the number one best-selling home standby generator in the United States. Guardian models include generators with 10, 14, 18, 20, 22, 24, and 26-Kilowatt Capacity. The company discontinued their 20-kilowatt model in favor of the 22-kilowatt. Generac makes it headquarters in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
26kW Generators from the two companies compete with larger and more expensive liquid-cooled generators. Air-cooled models use a fan driven by the engine to blow air over the engine and other components to keep them cool. Liquid-cooled generators pump coolant through the engine into a radiator where air blown by fan cools it before circulating back to the engine.
The cost savings of an air-cooled in purchase and installation are substantial. They have half the footprint of a liquid-cooled machine and install 18 inches from the building instead of five feet. They easily fit into the landscaping around your home instead of taking up space in the yard.

Designed for larger homes and small businesses, the 26kW has 33 percent more power than competing 20-Kilowatt models. With the 200-Amp Service Rated Automatic Transfer Switch, the Briggs and Stratton 26kW Generator 40678 powers multiple air conditioners, the water heater, pumps, and all the essentials and conveniences.
Briggs and Stratton builds PowerProtect Generators in the USA from US and foreign parts and powered by Vanguard commercial-grade v-twin engines made in the USA.
Amplify Power Management (modules sold separately) control up to 32 heavy loads, including air conditioners. A smartphone app puts control into the hands of the user, allowing priority changes on the fly as needs change. Generator models sold with an Amplify Transfer Switch include the Amplify Gateway with InfoHub.
Briggs and Stratton offers their Remote Monitoring Service Infohub separately or includes it with Amplify Transfer Switches.
Homes with a split 300-Amp or 400-Amp service will benefit from the Dual 200-Amp Split 400-Amp Transfer Switch Model.

Bundled with two automatic transfer switches, the 40679 is designed specifically for homes with a split service—two main panels instead of one—each with a 200-Amp or 150-Amp main breaker.
For special configurations or installations where a compatible transfer switch is already in place, the Briggs and Stratton 26kW generator 40658 comes without a transfer switch or gateway.

Generac 26kW Generator Guardian Series
The Generac Guardian Series is the number one best-selling generator in America. 7 out of 10 homeowners choose a Generac Guardian home standby generator.
Generac unveiled the 22-kilowatt in 2014, making it the most powerful home generator in its class. Six years later, the 24-kilowatt made its debut and unseated the 22 as the most powerful. Two years later, the 26-kilowatt takes the top position in the Guardian Series. With the smart-grid-ready 200-Amp Automatic Transfer Switch, the home becomes a virtual power plant during peak energy periods to lower homeowner energy costs and reduce the strain on the electric grid.
The 26kW Generac Generator has two basic configurations, with a transfer switch and without.
